Air Conditioning: Sweet Relief

2nd Dec 2014

Air conditioning has been widely used since the earlier 1950's, and has brought relief to millions of individuals who would have had to otherwise suffer from the heat. Conditioning units are generally quite effective, and have been built with efficiency in mind; however, every piece of equipment eventually needs some sort of TLC, so let's take a look at some tips that will help you keep your mini split, PTAC and other conditioners in top shape.

Changing Filters is a Must

Conditioners work by moving air throughout the system; the filters collect harmful particles, pieces of dust and other particles. A filter eventually gets extremely dirty, and needs to be changed; one solid tip is before buying a filter, take a look at its MERV value, which stands for "minimum efficiency reporting value". It ranges from a "1" to a "12", and the higher the number, the better it is able to filtrate airborne particles. Keep on top of changing the filters, and you should have very few issues.

Fix Air Leaks

This isn't necessarily an issue with the actual unit, but air leaks can directly affect how hard a conditioner must work in order to efficiently cool an area. If you have an area with doors that don't seal properly, or you feel air flowing around a window frame, steps should be taken in order to make everything as air tight as possible. This will allow for an air conditioner to efficiently cool a room, without having to overtax it or spend more on energy bills.

Keep the Unit Free of Obstructions

Most air conditioning units, depending on what type, generally require a clear space around it to keep some of the functioning parts churning along effectively. A good rule of thumb is to keep around two feet of space clear; as long as you don't have a unit pushed against a wall or other objects, you should be fine.

Use Common Sense to Lower Temperature

Make it easier on your unit by keeping the blinds lowered during the warmest parts of the day; if you know it is going to be a hot one, make sure to not keep the windows open until you decide to turn the air on, because it will only be that much hotter inside.

Brands such as the YMGI mini split ductless are an excellent unit to invest in, especially if you want quality; if you want a unit that is environment-friendly, as well as installation and user-friendly, look no further than YMGI.
